Industrial Video Designs, Installs, and Supports Cable 9’s High Definition Production Truck

PhotoCable 9, an award winning local origination / community access channel, turned to Industrial Video when a need was developed to upgrade its television production truck from standard definition to high definition. Many conceptual meetings and design iterations between Dennis Suchetka, Program Director at Cable 9, and Industrial Video led to a successful final truck layout. Industrial Video and Cable 9 were successfully able to overcome space limitations, power issues and comfort for the operators. The uniquely created solutions additionally help support application requirements for live production as well as post-production and play-to-air cable channels.

PhotoOne of the most important decisions that Industrial Video assisted on was choosing between cameras that operate over triax versus fiber. Ultimately the decision was made to purchase four Sony HXC-100 series triax cameras with Fujinon lenses. Having an existing standard definition Grass Valley Kayak DD 1 ME switcher made the switcher upgrade a comfortable transition. Four years prior, when the truck was upgraded to a serial digital, the plan was to simply upgrade the electronics “tub” to high definition and use the existing switcher panel. By using the existing panel the staff could quickly and easily use the new high definition switcher and eliminate the learning curve.

PhotoOne of the biggest upgrades was in the area of instant replay. Cable 9 moved from a tape based playback system as well an older DPS hard drive system to the widely accepted Grass Valley Dyno replay system. The four channel system, configured as two channels of record and two channels of playback enabled them to quickly create replay lists with internal effects. The Dyno offered a dramatic change in capabilities and creativity from their previous systems.

Making the transition to high definition normally requires conversion equipment and Cable 9 was no different. Through the use of two AJA FS-1 Frame Synchronizers, two standard definition sources are able to be integrated into a live production. In addition, two AJA KiPro recorders provide high definition recordings of the events, as well as convert signals to standard definition, so two DVCAM SD VTRs are still supported, a requirement for Cable 9’s play-to-air system. These features contribute to Industrial Video’s highly customized Cable 9 vehicle to effectively serve its seven communities in the outside of Cleveland, Ohio.
